Mighty Chess King

After five years of playing chess after school at Sonnesyn, Oliver is finishing up by participating in the State Chess Tournament this weekend.  He started the year at the back of the pack, not really sure if he wanted to participate in his final elementary school year.  However, as I mentioned a while back, he managed to pull his way through the list to the top spot at least once this year.

"The Mighty Kings of Sonnesyn Elementary School in New Hope capped an undefeated season by winning their first district chess championship.

The team, coached by Mike Klein and his assistants, went 6-0 this season. Each year, the Robbinsdale Area elementary schools which have an active chess club play one another in a round robin format, fielding teams of 10 and visiting each others’ schools to play a match. This is the first league championship achieved at Sonnesyn since Klein began coaching the team twelve years ago.

The State Chess Championship tournament will be held on April 21 and 22nd at Breck School in Golden Valley. At least a dozen Robbinsdale Area Schools students will be competing in that tournament, and they are ready for it after what has been a strong year of tournament for the district."

Another undefeated season in Oliver's fifth grade year!

He has a full day on Saturday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and two final games on Sunday, before the awards are handed out.  We will make sure he has plenty of rest and a good breakfast to fuel the brain!

Go Oliver & the Mighty Kings!
