Armstrong Spring Choir Concert 2018

It's been quite some time since I've been able to keep up with blogging, but I'm dropping a few videos and photos out here in the hopes I will get back to it soon.

This is one of my favorites performed by the Armstrong Chamber Singers at this past Spring concert.

Wanting Memories (Ysaye Barnwell) Performed by Armstrong High School Chamber Singers Spring Concert 2018

Henry was also home during this time so he got to see Oliver perform,
as well as join in the alumni song at the end of the concert.

The full concert is on the district website.

May I take your order please?

I have been making their lunches almost every single day since Kindergarten.  It used to be PB&J every single day.  Then during middle school, they each were allowed/chose one day a week to have hot lunch, while the rest still came from home.  In high school, that's now progressed back to hand-made lunches by Mom. Every other day is generally meat of some sort, followed by PB&J.  It's a good thing neither of them (or their friends) have ever had a problem with peanut butter. With growing boy appetites, their lunch also consists of fruit, yogurt, chips, granola bar and drink.  Sometimes dessert or after school snack.  Their lunch bags burst at the seams!

Will I miss these notes?  Some day. After all, that's 14+ years, Monday through Friday and sometimes weekends, that I've been making their lunches.  My morning routine is about 45 minutes prep for the boys and 20 minutes for myself.  Yes, some day I'll have time on my hands that I won't know what to do with.

But for today, May I take your order please?

Memories are made of this...

I am so thrilled for these two and the entire Armstrong High School Marching Band for the experiences that they have had this week in Florida. This is what memories and magic are made of... friendships, music and times together that culminate in life-long storytelling.

Catching a flight there tomorrow morning, I am thrilled to be able to finish up the week with them. They have another parade in Ybor City and will perform in the halftime show during the Outback Bowl.  Unfortunately, the halftime show is not televised, so between myself and a whole slew of parents, I am sure we will return with some video and pictures to share!

to be continued...

Winter Choir Concerts 2015

For friends and family who cannot make it to see the boys sing...  here's a few selections from the Chamber Singers' Wassail! concert on Tuesday evening.  Henry is in this group.

More videos to come after this evening's concert.  The Freshmen sing at 6 pm, as do the Madrigals, of which Oliver is a part of...  it will be a great evening!

I love a parade!

Rehearsals have paid off and these two are officially stepping off on the correct foot in their marching career.  Oliver's first year and Henry's third.  I am pretty stoked about their love of band, well, all things music to be truthful.  They make this Momma smile big and proud!

If you're looking to see them marching/playing before the seasons ends, here are a few opportunities in the month ahead:

Tue 10/13star Parade of Bands Concert7:00 PMAHS Auditorium
Tue 10/31star Anoka Halloween Parade - Anoka, MN1:00 PM         Mainstreet Anoka

I'm having so much fun being a band booster again this year.  It's a lot of work and a ton of volunteer hours. I remember fondly how much time my parents put into it and the friends they made with MY friends' parents.  Amazing the network of bonds you can make with like-minded souls.

I will be traveling down to Tampa to see them march at the Outback Bowl and in a parade in Ybor City in December. I am not chaperoning this trip, however, so will go as a spectator, cheer them on and take plenty of pictures! My airfare is booked and I will rent a room from a place on AirBnB.  A lifetime of memories packed into this trip for maboys and hopefully one they will remember fondly forever.

PTX & MaBoys | Tweet Tuesday

As part of the boys' Christmas 2014, I purchased three tickets for us to go see Pentatonix.  I had taken Oliver the year before but knew that Henry would enjoy it too.  JP would be away visiting his brother and skiing in Denver, so the timing was good for a Mom & Sons date night.

We really enjoyed the evening with dinner before the concert and I specifically chose front row balcony for us.  Previous experience for Oliver and I was that the fans of PTX were fanatical and would STAND the entire concert.  I also knew they had a huge Twitter following.  Playing along, I took a pix of maboys enjoying the concert and tweeted it to the world.

Today's version of "lighters" at a concert

Let's just say, what happened next MADE Oliver's night.  The cherry on top.  As we were in the parking ramp and headed home for the evening, my phone notifications started blowing up.  Oliver picked up my phone and discovered that my picture was "chosen" and has been retweeted and favorited in PTX reply.  Just a "little bit" of viral for our evening and a night to remember.

The power of social media.

PTX Link

I can honestly say that I've never received so many gold stars in my life.  Or rather, I guess my association with this picture, because not many went to see the picture that was chosen.  Ha.

An evening to remember.

Throwback Thankful Thursday

Shared this photo above with Henry last night.
He replied to me via text - those were the days!

To which I replied,
"Yes, they were...  but these days are just as great!"

Parenting a Teenager

So, if we're friends on social media, you may have witnessed a little pity party by me this week.  Yes, I was feeling sorry for myself as a parent.  Truth of the matter is, I've been here before...  and while I thought it was just circumstances surrounding raising my eldest child (with a former ex), it turns out...  it was just about raising a TEENAGER.  Period.  And although I thought that I had clearly learned something from raising the first one, I'm not sure there's a manual to get through each year of each subsequent teen.  If I''m counting, I've got at least 5-7 more years of this ahead of me!

Many friends reached out when I asked for a virtual hug yesterday...  for that I am grateful.  thank you!!

I know I am not alone, regardless of circumstance or issue.  It takes a village.  We learn from one another and share in sorrows in successes, right?

And then a friend sent me an article that made it all sink in.  Reality.  In someone else's words.  I'm not alone (I knew this) in these struggles.  But to read it, and see a recent poll with findings on the subject...  well, that just opens up the world of possibilities once again.  A few excerpts below resonated with me in a way that calmed my racing heart.  I am not alone.  It's not me (or us) who are failing as parents.  Not even the collective we have the answers to raising a teenager.

"Once, I controlled the big decisions in their life," says Zeise, 39, who lives in Columbia, S.C. "Now they make decisions that can have drastic consequences. I feel like I am running out of time to teach them the important lessons they need," she writes.

How do we know we're teaching them the lessons that will stick?  If they're not responding or communicating, can we only assume?  hope?  Letting them gain wings of independence is scary.

This constant questioning and challenging can be stressful for parents, of course, but Palmiter says it's actually a healthy part of growing up, and it often means parents are doing everything right.
And there were many late nights for Myers because, like many parents, she just couldn't fall asleep until she knew Kamron was safely home.

Sleep?  Don't' even get me started.  My FitBit can attest to the fact that I am never going to be one of those parents who can fall off into blissful sleep while their child isn't under rooftop.  My other half has absolutely no problem with that...  guess we're just wired differently?  or is it a feature of a Mom?  I don't know.  Try as I might, even with the occasional TylenolPM {don't judge}, I still cannot sleep until I know he's somewhere safe or in bed.

What's the right way to parent?  Who is to say there is a right or wrong way to a parenting style?  What's your parenting style?  Haven't we all be raised by someone(s) who have done it right, or needed some help, and haven't we taken bits and pieces of our own upbringing to model what WE will do to raise the next generation?!  I'm doing my best to find the right way to raise my children, our children, the future generation of boys.  I believe that my parenting style falls somewhere between the right-hand side of this grid.

Many psychologists say the best parents can do is making sure they have instilled positive values in their children and then just hope for the best.
hope?    Many psychologists [with many degrees] don't offer any other advice?  Sure they do. A plethora of "how to" books are available to read, appointments with aforementioned psychologists can be made, and apparently a sprinkle of hope for good measure doesn't hurt either.

Bottom line - some measurement of success - how do we know we've instilled positive values?   Appropriate positive feedback from other parents, teachers and friends who know our children, right? Grades on report cards.  Success in activities and sports.  Bonded friendships with like-minded kids in their peer groups.  I would surely hope that we're doing something right.  At least I believe that we have done just that with maboys still in our care.  So I can take a little respite and breathe a sigh of relief on the feedback received to-date.

As for dealing with their own stress, Palmiter suggests parents seek support from other parents [emphasis mine], not just about their concerns but also about decisions. He also promotes special "one on one" time with your teenager. This means "being there" completely, cellphone unplugged, talking with your teen or observing them do an activity they enjoy like drawing, shooting basketball or playing an instrument. Just one hour a week of this special time can repair major differences, Palmiter says, and bring much-needed calm to households with teens.
Many girlfriends can attest to the fact that I have sought their support and advice. Many times over the years. I've even been able to advise on some occasions as well, I guess. We're there for one another, right? In this together?  Case in point [pity party on F@cebook] and asking for help, albeit vague, to just get through another day without completly losing it.  Sometimes that is just what I need. A collective sigh of relief.  A knowing smile or hug.  Mix in some room for coffee or a glass of wine while seeking aforementioned support...  occasionally, yes, and I hope that my kids don't come out of this forray into parenting all screwed up.  My one goal.  Well, a parenting through the teenage years goal anyway.

I've also done my best to spend one on one time with each of my boys.  I take advantage of time in the car, even on short trips, to ask about their day.  I take them to special events.  I am seeking to instill positive parenting, independence and growth, every step of the way.

So...  here I am.
A new day.
Hanging onto
the knot
at the
end
of my rope
tied yesterday;
I've climbed
 halfway back up,
with the support of friends
who care...
and I boldly leap
into
 another evening
of parenting my teens!

Now off to the 4th lacrosse game of the week.

274 days

Seems only yesterday these two were starting off on 7th and 9th grade and today...  is their last of "middle middle" and Freshman.  Another grade completed.  We started the day with Bruegger's and a photo to mark the occasion.  Smiles and shorts, the same as they began their school year a mere 274 days ago.

A fresh happy summer ahead for them, a new routine for Mom.
Exams completed, homework turned in, instruments shelved.
Lunch boxes put away, bottles washed and stored until next year.
Sleeping in for them, getting to work early for me.

Another school year behind us.  My how time flies.

Mother's Day 2014

It was a lovely day.
My mother and father came to celebrate.

JP cooked us a scrumptious meal.
We had a little bubbly.
The sun shone brightly.

Cannot believe how big ma boys have gotten!
They tower over me now,
but still do not mind posing for a photo.

Just missing one.
Hope he knows how much I love & miss him.

youth in confirmation

A little behind on blogging, so bear with me if it seems scattered in the coming weeks.

Henry is in his final year of confirmation classes, Oliver has just begun.  They attend confirmation on Wednesday evenings, give back to church with their time every Sunday (Henry: Grace Place assistant; Oliver: usher at early service), in addition to other education received and stewardship projects throughout the year.  Every fall they kick-off with both parents and kids in attendance.  This year was no different, except for the fact that it was...  in that there is a whole "changing of the guard" at Calvary.  The staff has almost completely turned over recently or changed roles, including the youth directors.  I was a little hesitant and anxious when we sat in the pew last month.  The first talk, however, went well and I took a few notes to keep us all reminded of some mini-goals in parenting and relating to one another.

WNL 2013-2014  9/10/13

Students, Things your parents want you to know:

  • See me as a grown up - treat me like an adult comes with expectations
  • Honor your parents; Ephesians 6:1 "how you treat your mom is the best indicator to the one you will date in how you will treat a future relationship"
  • They want to hear the words "I love you" (out of the overflow of our heart that our mouths speak)
  • They want you to talk and use your words (have Grace for your parents)
  • Let your parents do their jobs - look out for you.

Parents, Things your kids want you to know:

  • Don't ever say again, "I know what it's like to be your age" (you don't in 2014)
  • Talk on their schedule (not after school, sports, etc); it's probably right before you're going to bed and they're wired
  • Listen more than talk (80/20); what if you surprise them with kindness {my words}; the consequence is never our relationship.
  • Keep it confidential; pray about it (Ruth Graham's way of parenting).  Not everything your child does needs to be broadcast.
  • Work on your poker face - they need to know they can tell you anything; you won't freak out.
  • Admit when you're wrong.

Looking forward to another year of educating ma boys in faith, and allowing them to make the choice of confirmation at the end of these years.  If Henry chooses to be confirmed, it will happen a year from now, October 2014.

school days

9th grade & 7th grade
Back to school.
Routine.
Packing lunches, early bedtimes,
a schedule, a dinner around the table.
Occasional conversation.

My happy place.
I know where ma boys are,
more often now than in summer.

They're learning, growing, making new friends,
expanding their brains and deciding on a future.

I still pack their lunches. Every single day.  In the past, they were able to choose one day a week that they wanted to indulge in whatever was on the menu at school.  Henry chose not to take a single hot lunch day last year and I'm anticipating the same this year.  Oliver's already got the calendar out and highlighted.  However, at $2.50 a lunch, I'm hoping to pare it back even further to his top 3 choices surfacing on the menu, not a guaranteed once a week.

I've purchased new water bottles too!  Got them from a wholesaler, however, so found a blue bottle and I am stocked for the year in case one breaks.  My attempt to wean the boys off of {insert name brand} juice boxes for their lunch will succeed this year!  I am also looking to make sure that their lunches (1) are healthy & full of nutrients for growing/learning, (2) fill their bellies for the duration of their school day, and (3) save us money in the process! This Momma is even back in the routine of packing a healthy lunch too!

They had a great start to their day on Tuesday!  I splurged and got them a little java.  Back into the swing of a new routine, with one in high school and the other in middle school, and it's feeling great.

...only 10 short years ago...

another school year {poof}

Back in September,
big smiles of anticipation,
new shoes in neon colors,
big smiles and hope for all
that another school year would bring.

My wishes for you were simple:
Have fun.  Make new friends.
Respect your teachers.  Learn.
...and live in the moment,
before the moment is gone.

Nine months, the last day of school.
I woke you early to have a breakfast.
We talked about what you've accomplished.
Oliver even used a metaphor and named it.

Celebrate today.  You made it.
Yearbook signing for Oliver. End of 6th grade.
Valleyfair (in the rain) for Henry.  Middle school completed.

Lessons learned.  Science projects.
Concerts performed.  Homework done.
Winter sports and family life crammed into the middle.
Some habits {procrastination} still hard to break.
But, overall, you both had a great year.
I'm still very, very proud of you.

love,
Mom

the feeling is mutual

It might be drawing near to the end
of the school year when...
  • my kitchen table is no longer available for eating and looks like something like this on a daily basis
  • we run out of glue sticks and double-sided tape from the dollar store faster than I can replenish it
  • the request for a tri-fold poster board has me hitting three different stores because I'll be darned if I'm willing to pay $6.99 for something that's going to be thrown away immediately after graded {dollar store had one that he liked best of all...  for $1}
  • you go to bed nightly before the kids do, by almost ninety minutes
  • the boys wake up looking exhausted and needing a 5-hour energy shot just to get moving and to the breakfast table (no, I didn't give them one)
  • titles of homework in a Word document show increasing less descriptors for what they are and more of how he feels
  • morning routine now includes statements like, "what's left to do?" and "don't forget to hand that in", as well as printing copious amounts of documents that suck up the last of the printer ink

Yes, folks, it's almost time to be finished with 6th and 8th grade for the year in our house,
and most importantly, no more nagging about late and missing work to get the grade*!

Come on, June 5th!!

*anything higher than currently failing five classes due to missing homework

Mother's Day 2013

Had a wonderful day of celebration!  Not sure where the time went, but here's a short recap.

JP and I were up early and off to the Minneapolis Farmers Market - one of our favorite places to be on a Sunday morning in the summer.  We had to purchase a few more items for the straw bale gardening, and some herbs for breakfast.  It was very cold and eerily quiet there, so we didn't stay long.  We will head back to people watch another morning.

a little foam with your latte?
With his fresh herbs and recipes splayed out on the counter, I left JP home, full with a caffeine buzz, to get breakfast started.  He is in his glory & element when left to do as he wishes in the kitchen!

the beginnings of yummy goodness!
Met my parents at church to see Oliver's last musical performance in the youth choir at Calvary.  He is in the top row, far left by the white flag.  This was obviously one of his favorite songs of the program.

Happy to be done with youth musicals, can you tell?

Headed back home to a scrumptious brunch made by Chef John Paul.  Sausage & Asparagus strata and Blueberry Pecan Coffee Cake.  Bloody Mary's by Julie.

The rest of the day was just a perfect, lazy afternoon, with a photo session tossed in to commemorate the day, of course!

Oliver, Grandma, Grandpa, Henry

Nothing like lovin' from ma boys to make the day complete!
